The interface decides everything
Integration is only possible to the extent that a system exposes a way in. A modern API offers far more options than old software that can only export a file.
Common integration methods
- APIs, where the system offers structured access
- Webhooks, where it can notify you of events
- Scheduled file exchange, for older software
- Direct database access, rarely and carefully
Expect limits
Most services impose rate limits or quotas, and some charge for heavy use. These constraints shape what is realistic.
Plan for failure
Networks drop and services go down. Good integration assumes this, retries sensibly, and raises an alert when something needs attention.
Keep secrets secret
Integration usually involves credentials. These belong in secure configuration, never in code or the browser.
